Brighton-based Londoner Josef originally studied Graphic design and Illustration at Central St Martins. His current mixed media artistic practice includes elements such as: Childhood experiences, outlines, cut-out figures, animals, texture; these core elements mingle with a variety of influences, from a fascination with stained glass windows to music, underground New York club culture, literature and personal identity. He produces work which is often quirky, decorative and layered, displaying strength in colour. However it often also contains an undercurrent that disturbs the joke, pointing at deeper themes of race and sexuality.
Josef has produced and shown work in a variety of contexts, and his original artwork has found its way to many corners of the globe, including Japan, Singapore, Australia and the USA. He has completed illustration commissions for books, magazines and public health education campaigns, as well as work within and for public libraries.
